Working at Heights

Upon successful completion of the working at heights training delegates will be issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.
For all day courses the delegates will be provided with refreshments throughout the day and a meal at lunchtime. All candidates wishing to sit a working at heights course should be a minimum of 16 years old and be medically fit.
Due to the nature of these courses and to ensure the safety of the delegates any practical sessions due to take place will be postponed if there are high winds, in excess of 20mph.

Height safety awareness

Half Day

Who should attend?
This course should be attended by anybody tasked with or affected by work at height to ensure safety in the workplace.

What will be covered?

  • This training session is intended as the basic foundation for working safely at height.
  • This course does not cover any specific skills required to carry out a work task or to use specialist height safety equipment. (These skills are covered in different courses.)
  • Delegated will gain a thorough knowledge of all possible methods of controlling the potential fall from height.
  • The course will identify the relevance and implications of the work at height regulations 2005 so that the individual can comply with his/her duties, whether planning, controlling or conducting work tasks at height.
  • This course is intended as a pre-requisite for all of the other working at heights and rescue from heights courses.

Inspection of personal fall protection equipment

One Day

Who should attend?
This training course should be attended by anybody who wishes to gain the knowledge and ability to establish and implement an inspection regime, to gain the necessary skills to competently inspect fall protection equipment, and decide what action is to be taken when finding defects.

What will be covered?

  • This course focuses on the inspection of personal fall protection equipment predominantly made from webbing or rope, and does not cover other types of PPE, or equipment such as installed anchor points.

Harness and Fall protection equipment training

One Day

Who should attend?
This course should be attended by anybody who will be performing work tasks at height, where it has been identified personal fall protection equipment as the appropriate control method. It is envisaged that anybody attending this course would have gained the knowledge of the dangers of working at height by attending the height safety awareness course. Upon successful completion of this course the candidate may require practical training in the use of any item of equipment selected to be suitable for the work task(s) and then progress to gaining the skills to perform rescue from height.

What will be covered?

  • This course will provide the delegates with the information required of them to safely use items of personal fall protection equipment to protect against the potential fall from height.
  • The course will cover identification, selection and use of many different items of equipment that are available in the European marketplace.
  • The course will include the requirements to perform a pre-use safety inspection of the equipment, the faults and dangers that may be identified, which items of FPE are appropriate for various types of work tasks, how each item of FPE is to be used to create a safe fall protection system, and the dangers of falling.
  • The session does not cover the practical skills required to carry out the identified work task(s) or how to perform a rescue of either a worker stranded in a high work position or of a worker who sustains an arrested fall.  (These skills are covered in separate courses.)

Practical use of personal fall protection equipment

The duration of this course is dependant on the equipment needed to be covered and the complexity of the work task(s) to be performed

Who should attend?
This training course should be attended by delegates that have successfully completed the harness and FPE theory training session and are requiring practical knowledge and experience in the ise of the selected items of personal fall protection equipment.

What will be covered?

  • Delegates will be required to manoeuvre safely around a simulated work environment, whilst displaying the correct use of the selected FPE, however the actual work task(s) may not be performed.
  • The exact content of the course is flexible upon the needs and the task(s) that are to be performed.
  • This course does not cover the practical skills required to perform a rescue of either a worker stranded in a high work station or of a worker who sustains an arrested fall. (These skills are covered in a separate course.)

Practical use of rescue from height equipment

Half day – One day

Who should attend?
This training course should be attended by anybody who works at height and requires training in the techniques to effect the rescue of a colleague who has suffered an arrested fall.

What will be covered?

  • This course covers the legal and moral requirements to provide rescue cover for those working at height and the first aid procedures that should be followed.
  • Practical training in the skills required to perform a rescue of a worker who has sustained an arrested fall.
  • Practical training will cover the use of the equipment to provide rescue when a worker has sustained a fall whilst using an energy absorbing lanyard. Suitable anchorage positions, raising the casualty back to the work platform, and lowering to a point of safety.
  • The standard half day course can be extended to a full day to offer greater practical training time or to consider rescues where a casualty has been using other items of FPE (for example – guided type fall arresters or retractable devices).
